The Hennessy Brunch Martini

March 22, 2017 by Jenna Haines Leave a Comment

Picture

One of my favorite things about brunch is that it isn’t just a meal; it’s a concept. That is why you can “brunch up” something, like a drink or a dish not typically associated with the morning, but you never hear someone suggesting you “lunch up” a recipe. That distinction is where the beauty and creativity of brunch lies—in finding ways to apply elements of brunch to unrelated recipes and creating something new and exciting in the process.

So when I stumbled upon a video for a Hennessy Brunch Martini (scrolling through the internet searching for divine brunch enlightenment, of course), I suspected I hit gold. While many of us enjoy cognac, I think we can all agree that Hennessy is not all too associated with brunch. But this recipe turns that theory on its head by adding orange marmalade into the mix—not an ingredient I typically (or ever) throw into cocktails on my own fruition. But I love Hennessy, and I love brunch-ativity (i.e. brunch creativity), so I decided to give it a go.

The Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz Hennessy V.S
  • .5 oz lime juice
  • Spoonful of orange Marmalade
  • Garnish: Orange Twist
  • Glass: Martini or Coupe

The Directions:

  • According to Hennessy’s website, you’re supposed to “[a]dd all ingredients to a shaker with ice and shake until chilled, strain into a martini glass or coupe and garnish with an orange twist.”

Atlanta Brunch Festival Rundown

March 17, 2017 by Jenna Haines Leave a Comment

Picture

This past Saturday, I attended Atlanta’s Brunch Festival. Restaurants from around the area gathered at Atlantic Station to sell samples of their tastiest brunch bites at $3 a piece to eager brunch enthusiasts.

I opted in for VIP tickets (I mean, I had to), and with it came early entrance to the event, three food tickets, and unlimited access to the Mimosas, beer, Bloody Marys, and other brunchy Vodka concoctions in the designated VIP area.

The early access alone saved us a lot of grief. We were able to quickly work our way through the lines and get a big picture view of the festival and its activities (there was some giant Jenga, beer pong, and wind hammock napping going on) before the crowds maxed out the space. The unlimited booze? Definitely not a bad perk. The lines for the VIP drinks were pretty unforgiving right from the get-go (I’m pretty sure we all had the same idea), but the drinks were tasty and surprisingly stout. And once I got that first drink in hand, waiting in line for follow-up drinks didn’t seem to matter quite so much. [Read more…]

Frothy Monkey Opens in Chatt

March 8, 2017 by Jenna Haines Leave a Comment

Frothy Monkey, a staple in Nashville since 2004, has finally opened for business in the scenic city. Located directly next to the main entrance of the Chattanooga Choo Choo, Frothy is sort of a hybrid coffee shop-meets-restaurant-meets-bar. So, naturally, their brunch game is on point. And, unlike the neighboring brunch competition in the Southside, their brunch is available every day until 5 p.m.—a Hail Mary for brunch lovers in the service industry.

The atmosphere of Frothy is unique. The décor of the building combines the old-world, Choo Choo vibes (brick walls, exposed ceilings, etc) with more modern paint colors, art, and furniture. My favorite piece of design occupies the bulk of the room—their behemoth of a bar. It is split into three sections with cashiers and quick-grabs up front and separate areas for coffee and beer/wine/liquor to the sides.

The number of times I have been here alone speaks volumes. I came in on Saturday for an exclusive peek at the brunch menu and have already been back twice in less than a week. On Saturday, the table ordered the California breakfast with a side of bacon, the Architect Omelet, the Buck (a Reuben sandwich), the Biscuits and Gravy, and the Red Velvet Donut Muffin (from the pastry menu). To drink, we ordered the Monkey Mocha, Mimosas, and Beer-Mosas. Just today, I ordered the Julie, a bagel sandwich with eggs, tomato, feta (I’m a feta cheese monster), and basil.

Ceniza: Upscale Cuban in the Burbs

March 3, 2017 by Jenna Haines Leave a Comment

Ceniza—an upscale, Cuban restaurant and cigar bar in Cambridge Square (Ooltewah)—offers the kind of Sunday brunch worthy of a first date, a visiting in-law, or just a “treat yourself” kind of weekend.

My special occasion was my sister’s visit from Seattle. Our table ordered mojitos and mimosas to get the party started (I hadn’t seen her in almost three years, so we had to brunch it up right). Though Ceniza doesn’t have any clearance-priced drink specials, their cocktails were worth the indulgence. The mojito was by far my favorite. The mint was fresh and the concoction smooth.

Next up, the food. I am often talked out of my desire to be a little more menu adventurous by the advice of servers. Not this time. I wanted the Shredded Oxtail Sammy, and the server recommended—more like ecstatically raved about—the Shredded Oxtail Sammy. Do you know how rare it is for the waiter to actually suggest the thing you originally wanted?

Brunching While Vegan: Food Works

February 24, 2017 by Trevor Haines Leave a Comment

Picture

I eat a plant-based (vegan) diet, and some might wonder why I bother going out for brunch when I can’t enjoy that magical, Sunday morning rainbow of bacon that leads to a golden pile of eggs on the other side. Besides the obvious point that sparkling wine unifies all dietary approaches, with a little creativity, I have found that I can enjoy a brunch paradise just as fulfilling as my meat-eating friends—even when the restaurant does not appear to offer vegan or vegetarian choices.

One of my favorite brunches is at Food Works (205 Manufactures Rd.) on the NorthShore. With $1 sparkling wines, $1 Mimosas, and $3.50 Bloody Marys to get me started, waiting for my food to hit the table becomes an affordable pleasure. I like to arrive right after they open on Sunday at 10 a.m. (before the restaurant gets packed) and grab a seat at the bar where Clay and Jesse run the show.

If I went by menu alone, I would be relegated to side dishes (which I have done before; it is tasty but less interesting). Instead, I order the Breakfast Burrito off the menu but with a host of substitutions. Instead of eggs, I get beans and rice. Instead of the sausage, I get portebella mushrooms. The potatoes in the burrito are the only original ingredients that stay. Normally, it is topped with a cheese sauce, but I substitute that too for hot sauce. Vegan Tip: These substitutions were inspired by just a quick gander at their other regular menu options so that I could deduce what raw ingredients the kitchen had easy access to. You can apply this trick anywhere.

Embargo ’62: Brunch with Cuban Flavor

February 10, 2017 by Chattanooga Brunches Leave a Comment

Picture

When I discovered Embargo ’62 was launching their new brunch menu this past weekend (February 5), I immediately cancelled my plans elsewhere and stopped by this colorful hole-in-the-wall on the NorthShore. As a brunch connoisseur, I am excited anytime I find a brunch menu that does something a little different (even I get bored of plain eggs and bacon once in a while). And this Cuban brunch spot definitely did the trick.

First and foremost, the restaurant immediately put me at ease, like going to Grandma’s after Sunday church (if my Grandma was Cuban and a heavy pourer). The décor was both warm and eclectic, complete with a swordfish hanging on the wall aside scattered picture frames. And in front of that giant fish sat a one-man-band/singer/keyboard player named Rafi, who immediately got up to greet each of us before livening up the room with some Salsa.

I ordered a Cuban coffee, Sangria, and the Brittany Benedict (see menu), while the others at the table ordered the Embargo ’62 Brunch Burrito and Mimosas. Now the food was good—a quality eggs Benedict with the added complexity of Cuban-styled ground beef and a surprisingly crunchy bread base—but the drinks were the star of the show.

“Be My Valentine” Brunch Bellini

February 8, 2017 by Chattanooga Brunches Leave a Comment

Picture

I got engaged two weeks ago, so it’s pretty safe to say I’m all about Valentine’s Day this year. But nothing great in this world truly exists without a brunch twist, right?

So grab the Champagne or Prosecco, and join us in adding a sexy dash of brunch this February 14 (or the Sunday before or after) because we’ve got the perfect drink for you! Our very own “Be My Valentine” Brunch Bellini—loaded up with one of our favorite aphrodisiacs, the strawberry.

Ingredients:

  • Champagne or Prosecco
  • 1 pint of Strawberries
  • 4 tbsp. of Simple Syrup

Directions:

  1. Pour simple syrup* and strawberries together in blender, leaving enough strawberries out for the garnish later—meaning two strawberries if you’re confident you won’t need a practice run.
  2. Blend until liquid!
  3. Pour bubbly into Champagne flute three-quarters of the way to the top (adapt to preference).
  4. Fill the rest of the flute with the strawberry-syrup blend.
  5. Stir! This is important if you don’t want your cocktail to look icky (we’re not kidding).
  6. Sculpt remaining strawberries into hearts by removing each stem, cutting a V into the top, and carefully slicing the bottom of the strawberry through the center so the strawberry can straddle the rim of your glass (it’s a a sexy drink; what did you expect?).
  7. Garnish, serve with chocolate (another favorite aphrodisiac), and enjoy!
  8. We made our own simple syrup by dissolving equal parts sugar and water by boiling until liquid.

Recipe: Country Poinsettias

December 20, 2016 by Chattanooga Brunches Leave a Comment

If you’re looking for the perfect New Year’s Day brunch beverage or just something impressive to serve your family and friends over the holidays, we got the perfect drink for you.

We took our favorite Poinsettia recipes online (shout out to Martha Stewart and the Food Network) and tweaked them to our southern liking. And that means, of course, adding a dash of southern liquor. We chose Picker’s Blood Orange Vodka from Nashville, Tennessee. The result? Chattanooga Brunches’ very own Country Poinsettias! Drink responsibly.

Ingredients Per Drink (Double Per Person):

  • 1 oz. of Pickers Blood Orange Flavored Vodka
  • 1 oz. of Cranberry Juice
  • 1–2.5 oz. of Champagne (we used Korbel Brut)
  • 1 slither of Orange Zest
  • Crushed Ice

Directions:

  1. Mix one shot of vodka and one shot of cranberry juice in a ice-filled cocktail shaker; double recipe for two drinks (see video for example).
  2. Shake until frosty (cocktail shaker should look like your car window on a cold morning).
  3. Add crushed ice to glass(es) (can use either a cocktail or wine glass depending on desired tempereature/aesthetic).
  4. Pour vodka-cranberry mixture over ice.
  5. Pop champagne, and pour to rim of glass.
  6. Garnish with slither of orange zest.
  7. Enjoy!

Editor’s Letter: Why I Love Brunch

June 11, 2014 by Jenna Haines Leave a Comment

I fell in love with brunch while living in Manhattan. Though I wasn’t very well off financially (I was a poor college student at New York University), brunch was my splurge. It was time to bond with friends, roommates and out-of-town guests who had never seen the likes of bottomless Bellinis and DJs rocking out over scrambled eggs. When I moved back to Chattanooga last May, I was worried that all the fancy brunches I had grown accustomed to were a thing of the past. In fact, I almost moved to Atlanta instead in part due to brunch attachment issues.

Fortunately, I made the scenic city my home because Chattanooga’s brunch scene is blowing up. Just from the time I started working on this site to today, the amount of local restaurants that serve brunch has vastly increased. This isn’t just great news for my taste buds (and for squelching the occasional ache for New York); It substantiates the need for Chattanooga Brunches‘ existence. I’d like to say we had the foresight to be at the front of this growing trend, but the reality is that I just love brunch… which leads me to the ultimate question:

“If you love brunch like I do, you’ve certainly met a few brunch naysayers in your lifetime. “So, it’s just a combination of breakfast and lunch…” “Brunch is for hipsters!” “How can you have brunch after lunch time? Isn’t it supposed to be between breakfast and lunch?” Sound familiar? Whether you’re a naysayer yourself or find yourself looking for retorts to these people, I have composed a list of why I, Jenna Haines, love brunch.

  • It combines the tastiest foods of the day. Brunch is essentially permission to eat breakfast at noon but with all the delightful things you might miss from the lunch menu. In layman’s terms, it’s like showing up at McDonalds and realizing you can order whatever you want from both the breakfast menu and the normal menu. Hello, breakfast burrito and fries.
  • Because brunch is cool (like bow ties if you’ve ever watched Dr. Who). It’s trendy without the exhausting characteristics of most hip things, i.e. staying up late and spending lots of money. If nothing else, it is, without a doubt, the coolest thing you’ll be doing on a Sunday before 2 p.m. Pinky out.
  • Heard of the hair of the dog? No, not the restaurant–though you can find them on our list of brunch spots. If you’re not familiar with the phrase’s origins, it’s the concept that consuming a little bit of alcohol in the morning alleviates the symptoms of a hangover. This is why brunch exists. Brunch was intended to be the meal after a night out, which is why it’s both later in the day and includes alcohol. Whether or not you actually drank the night before is moot at this point because waking up late and enjoying a tasty glass of bubbly and OJ or a spicy Blood Mary is going to brighten up your day regardless.
  • It’s its own event. Brunch is a reason in and of itself to brunch. It is a go-to excuse for fun. Want to catch up with old friends? Go to brunch. Bored? Go to brunch. Need a date idea? Go to brunch. It’s NEVER a bad time to brunch. Just the word brunch is like a shield from all potential judgment (at least from mutual brunch goers). Gluttonously eating and drinking with strangers? No problem. It’s brunch!

So why do you love brunch? Where do you love to go and why?
